Battle against asthma top priority for nurses

Asthma is strong on the minds of school nurses this year.

A new state law dictates that schools keep an asthma action plan for every student diagnosed with the chronic lung disease.

Nurses are getting the word out to parents about the requirement while conducting classes for school staff about asthma.

Nevels honored for 30 years with GPD

Friends and family honored Huntley Nevels, who recently retired as deputy Greenwood police chief, with a party at the police station Thursday.

Nevels stepped down effective July 1 after 30 years on the force, including 19 as deputy chief.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
