Rebels, Lions begin season on the road

The prep football teams at Carroll Academy and Delta Streets Academy will kick off their 2023 campaigns Friday on the road.
The Rebels, under the guidance of ninth-year head coach Bo Milton, aren’t wasting any time stepping into the fire as they take on the Canton Academy Panthers, the defending MAIS Class 3A state champions.

GHS, Elzy, Leflore in jamborees

The regular season doesn’t open for another week, but Greenwood High, Amanda Elzy, Leflore County and J.Z. George will get in some preseason action Friday night.

Leflore County starts volleyball season with win

The Leflore County girls volleyball team opened its season with a 3-0 win over Coahoma County Tuesday at Greenwood High School’s gym.
The Lady Tigers won the sets 25-16, 25-19 and 25-14.
Leflore will play Amanda Elzy at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at GHS.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
