Downtown property tax break passes

Those buying property in downtown Greenwood can now get a four-year break on property taxes if they make substantial improvements to the building.

The proposal, crafted by Main Street Greenwood, was passed unanimously at Tuesday’s Greenwood City Council meeting.

Woman charged in stabbing

A Greenwood woman has been charged in a Saturday night stabbing outside a local club, but police are still trying to piece together the details.

Addie McGill, 50, 208 Nichols Ave., has been charged with aggravated assault. She was released today on $5,000 bond.

A Mississippi Valley State University senior is among the 75 students chosen nationally as an “HBCU All-Star” by the White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

Local news matters to Greenwood. It keeps the people informed and connected. It asks the questions they want answered. It elevates what’s good, and it exposes what’s not.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
