Supervisors say generator not powerful enough

The Leflore County Board of Supervisors had a lengthy discussion regarding a generator for the Leflore County Justice Center on Monday.

The generator currently installed does not provide enough power for the building, board members said.

William McElroy of M3A Architects said the building project was completed as assigned.

Two state senators working to promote area interests

One is a veteran lawmaker and the other a newcomer, but two state senators whose districts include parts of Leflore County are pushing issues of interest.

Sen. David Jordan, D-Greenwood, is concentrating on a bill to fully fund education. The House already approved the bill.

Program helps kids walk, bike safely to school

The city of Greenwood is applying for a grant that would help students walk and bike to school safely.

Funds from the Safe Routes to Schools Program would sponsor the building of infrastructure - such as sidewalks, crosswalks and bike lanes - and encouragement programs.

Local news matters to Greenwood. It keeps the people informed and connected. It asks the questions they want answered. It elevates what’s good, and it exposes what’s not.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
