Community Work Center increases its inmate labor

The capacity of the Leflore County Community Work Center has increased by almost a third, providing more free inmate labor for the county and the city of Greenwood.

This trend comes as good news to all the cities and counties that use the workforce at the state's 17 CWCs, says state Corrections Commissioner Chris Epps.

Pernell defeats Cade for constable

Steve Pernell is the Republican nominee for constable in Leflore County's Northern District after beating Chip Cade in a runoff election both candidates praised for its comradery.

Pernell won with 615 votes, or 55.2 percent, to Cade's 499 votes, or 44.8 percent, according to unofficial results.

County court raises on hold

The Leflore County Board of Supervisors will not consider a requested raise for county court employees until next year's budget comes more into focus.

The board will meet for budget hearings starting at 4 p.m. Thursday. Even before then, though, 2004 fiscal year funds are looking slim, supervisors say.

Judge, police captain added to brutality lawsuit

A former repossession agent has expanded his $30 million police brutality lawsuit against the city of Greenwood and one of its lawmen to include a police shift captain and suspended Leflore County Judge Solomon C. Osborne.

A court date has been set for June 21 in U.S. District Court in Greenville.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
