The Greenwood High School tennis team, under the direction of Tammie Holmes, won its first competition of the young season as they defeated Leland High School 5-2 Wednesday in Leland.
In boys singles, Darrell Harris defeated Donald Washington 8-7 in a pro set match. In girls singles, Arlonda Henderson beat Madison Patterson 6-3, 6-0.
In No. 1 boys doubles, Luisha Stanley and Terron Westerfield shut down Jeremiah Williams and Jamarion Washington 6-1, 6-2. In No. 1 girls doubles, Kendall Smith and Davianna Brent topped Gabby Kalone and Nia Kendrick 7-5, 6-3. In the mixed doubles match, the GHS duo of David Kelly and Janiyah Henderson beat Kamilaya Jackson and Jadarius Holland 6-0, 6-1.
In No. 2 boys doubles, Gregory McLaurin and Trevor Russell lost to Mark Bassfield and Cason Shed 7-5, 6-2. In No. 2 girls doubles, Shandrea Brown and Stephany Lugo lost to Leland’s Morgan Shalon and Treasure Cosie 6-0, 6-1.
Greenwood played at Cleveland Central Thursday.
- Pillow tennis loses opener
The Pillow Academy tennis team lost its season opener at Hartfield Academy, 5-4, on Thursday.
The Hawks swept the girls side while the Mustangs swept the boys side. Hartfield won the decisive mixed doubles matchup to pull out the close victory.
Top singles player Noah Lary pulled off a clean sweep, 6-0, 6-0, and Dhruv Patel dominated No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-3. William Brown and Sumner Tackett won at No. 1 doubles, 6-3, 6-0, and Arnav Thakur and Walker Saia swept No. 2 doubles, 6-0, 6-0.
- Elzy softball wins: The Amanda Elzy girls fast-pitch softball team cruised to a 41-4 win over Leflore County Wednesday in three innings.
Mariyah Prayer (2-0) got the win in the circle as she allowed just one run with six strikeouts in two innings of work. Avril Silas pitched the third inning, striking out two.
Caleigh Phillips belted two home runs and had a single, and Silas had a single and double. Prayer had a single, double, two homers and stole two bases.
For Leflore (0-2), Jakyrra Sandifer and Markeshia Dixon had a hit each.
Elzy played host to Gentry Thursday, and Leflore does not return until March 14 as it visits Greenwood.
