The Greenwood Community Center will serve a hot Christmas luncheon to seniors and veterans Thursday at noon.
“It’s not just them coming to get a meal or a box (of food),” said center director Debra Adams. “We’re going to celebrate them.”
Everyone attending will receive a lunch at the center as well as a hot meal to go. In addition, Adams said about 150 boxes of canned goods and other food have been assembled for the center’s members most in need.
At a meeting of the Greenwood Voters League last week, Adams’ husband, Earnest, said that there is a great need to provide food for seniors. More than 75% of those who have signed up for the center’s food pantry are seniors.
Adams said that level of need has surprised her and her husband since they opened the pantry last year. She said the services provided to seniors have gotten a great reception.
“They are so grateful. They feel like somebody really does care,” she said. “They’re always telling us how much they appreciate what we’re doing for them. I wish we could serve all (of them).”
The homeless population is also in need she said. On Tuesday, a homeless person living in a car visited the center in need of food.
Adams praised businesses, schools and churches that helped to fill the pantry and the boxes that will be distributed Thursday. “This December, the community has really made a huge impact,” she said.
On Christmas Day, Adams and her husband will not be visiting family in Georgia for the first time since they returned to Greenwood. Instead, they will be providing more help and giving hot meals to Greenwood’s homeless.
