A Carroll County man has been charged in connection with a dog attack last week that forced the victim to have surgery.
The Carroll County Sheriff’s Department on Friday charged David Nich-olas Smith, 44, with five counts of simple assault by negligence and five counts of violating the county pit bull ordinance, according to a release from the department.
On Nov. 13, Ivan Bubba Rawles, a Delta Electric Power Association worker, was attacked by five pit bull dogs while finishing a job at a home near Holcomb.
Rawles suffered several injuries and had to be transported to the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson for surgery. He is expected to make a full recovery.
Family members of Rawles have started a GoFundMe fundraiser with a goal of $15,000 to help with medical costs.
“Our Daddy fought until he couldn’t fight any longer. They drug him from one end of the driveway to the other,” wrote Rawles’ oldest daughter, Adamie Sticker, on the GoFundMe page.
“If it was not for the owner of this house hearing the noise and terror, our Daddy would no longer be here with us. Our Daddy almost lost his life due to careless dog owners.”
Deputies identified Smith as the owner of the dogs.
The pit bull ordinance requires that the dogs be securely confined either indoors or within a pen if outside. No more than three pit bulls can be confined in any single dwelling.
Conviction on a first offense comes with a minimum fine of $250; for a second offense, the fine is at least $500.
Anyone convicted of a third or subsequent offense must pay a fine of at least $1,000 and permanently relinquish all pit bulls.
Smith has posted $5,000 bond and has been released from the Carroll Montgomery Regional Correctional Facility.
