The Greenwood Leflore Consolidated School Board went behind closed doors again Tuesday to discuss a personnel-related grievance for which a hearing had been held Monday.
On Tuesday, board members talked about the grievance as well as the job performance of another employee, according to Kelvin Pulley, the board’s attorney.
No action was taken.
During a special called meeting Monday, the board went into a closed-door session for a grievance hearing that lasted around four hours.
The board met Monday at the Leflore County Civic Center, rather than its regular location at district headquarters on U.S. 82, and quickly voted to go into executive session to hold the hearing.
This was the board’s only agenda item.
Dr. Mary Brown, the superintendent, and Kelia Washington, the chief of finance for the school district, were present with the board during the Monday session. Several district employees were rotated in one at a time.
After the board returned to the public’s view, Board President Samantha Milton said no action was taken.
On Tuesday, Milton said that there was no particular reason why the board met at the Civic Center and that the board has the authority to convene anywhere it sees fit.
She said the board had hired Jackson-based attorney Jim Keith as outside counsel. Keith “advises clients in the areas of employment, education and administrative law,” and “(a) focus of his practice involves the representation of educational entities, including school districts, community colleges and universities,” according to his profile with Adam and Reese Law Firm.
Milton said Keith is not serving as the hearing officer.
Keith could not be reached, but he later told Milton to communicate to the Commonwealth that since this grievance was filed by — and concerns — a member of the district’s personnel, there will not be further comment until the board has made a decision.
Milton added on Tuesday that once a decision has been made, it will be made public.
