Tommie Williams Sr., a Greenwood attorney, had a knack for preparation and was dedicated to his craft, colleague Marc Biggers said Thursday.
Biggers emphasized these qualities as he remembered his longtime friend, who died Wednesday at the age of 72 at Greenwood Leflore Hospital.

A memorial service for Betty Lacy-Simmons of Greenwood will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Living Faith Cathedral.
Ms. Lacy-Simmons, 62, died Wednesday, June 25, 2025, in Jackson.
Elder Maurice Lawson will officiate at the services.
Century Funeral Home is in charge.

Mr. Lucas, 73, died Sunday, June 29, 2025, at Bolivar Medical Center in Cleveland.
He was a mechanic.
Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday at Century Funeral Home.
Pastor Sophia Lucas will officiate at the services.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
