More infrastructure improvements are coming to North Carrollton.
Mayor Ken Strachan said the Board of Aldermen approved using its second portion of money from the American Rescue Plan Act toward a road improvement project on George Street near J.Z. George High School.
The funds, totaling more than $105,000, will help fix a portion of the road that collapsed during a flood in June 2021.
He said temporary repairs have allowed traffic to proceed to and from the school. The funds will allow for permanent repairs.
He said he has been working with Willis Engineering on the need for new culverts that will allow for better flood drainage.
“The existing culverts under George Street are old and have been needing repairs for a long time,” Strachan said.
“I want North Carrollton to get the most we can from this funding. This will be an investment for our town, with this street going to J.Z. George High School for generations to come.”
He said Willis Engineering will proceed with design plans as the city prepares for bidding.
The street repairs are the latest in a line of improvement projects being undertaken in North Carrollton.
Through more than $449,000 in grant funds, a new chlorine station will be built in the North Carrollton Industrial Park. Accompanying the station will be two new sewer pumps, new water lines, a manhole and cleaning lines.
More than $350,000 provided by the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) will be used for improvements to the Carroll County Tabernacle, including new restrooms, lighting and sidewalks.
Finally, MDOT is also funding a new bridge project that will replace the current bridge over Big Sand Creek between North Carrollton and Carrollton. It will take about a year for the new bridge to be completed.
