31% Drop In Some Timber Stumpage Prices
High interest rates, inflation and the looming possibility of a recession caused some timber prices in North Mississippi to fall as much as 31% in the 3rd Quarter according to the timber price reports of Mississippi State University. Pine Poles ranged from $25 to $36 per ton, Pine Sawtimber $14.50 to $26 per ton, Pine Chip-N-Saw $4.50 to $15 per ton and there were again Pine Pulpwood sales as low as 25 Cents per ton with the regional high price for Pine Pulpwood being $2.00 per ton. Oak Sawtimber ranged from $15 to $60 per ton, Mixed Hardwood $15 to $42 per ton, and Hardwood Pulpwood $2 to $8 per ton. Mississippi State projects that stumpage prices will decrease even further in the 4th quarter and through 2023. New sawmill facilities are being built in the area to take advantage of the extremely low stumpage prices but are not expected to have any significant impact on stumpage prices due to the extreme oversupply of timber.
