“Heaven on Earth,” the theme for this year’s coronation of Mr. and Miss Mississippi Valley State University certainly came true for Le’Andria D. Williams.
Williams, a speech communications major at Valley, was elected Miss MVSU by other students in March. The official crowning came Thursday night during the Valley coronation ceremony.
“It’s been really emotional,” Williams said. “This has been the best homecoming here yet, and not because I am Miss MVSU, but because we had more events and more participation.”
Barbara Baymon, Miss MVSU ’88-89 and adviser to Williams, said the coronation is the highlight of homecoming week. Mr. and Miss MVSU each must have a 3.0 grade point average and a spotless disciplinary record.
“It’s an exciting time for her right now,” Baymon said. “All females are queens whether they get to wear the crown or not. It’s wonderful for her to have the opportunity to go out there in front of everyone and make MVSU proud.”
University President Donna Oliver witnessed her first Valley coronation Thursday night. She said the ceremony is an excellent reward for the students who have worked very hard.
“This recognizes the other side of students,” Oliver said. “It recognized their commitment to community, to others and to service. I love to see them dressed so elegantly and glamorous in addition to showing off academically as well.”
Before the event, Williams said she was most looking forward to Oliver placing the crown atop her head.
“That’s when it’s official,” Williams said. “I just am so thankful for everyone that supported me and my king.”
Miss MVSU wasn’t the only nervous royalty at the coronation. Leroy Lucas, Mr. MVSU and a Greenwood native, took time from reviewing his “King’s Address” to express his emotions leading up to the event.
“I am speechless,” Lucas said. “I’m ready to officially be Mr. MVSU. I hope to represent my school to the best of my ability.”
Lucas, a double major in chemistry and biology, said he is also proud to represent his hometown on campus.
“It means a lot to be able to represent not only the campus but Greenwood as well,” Lucas said. “It means I have a lot more to be responsible for and a lot more to be thankful for.”
Lucas also had a message for next year’s round of candidates.
“Prepare to be better,” Lucas said. “This week of homecoming events has been great, and I’d like to see it get better and better.”
