A new weapons policy for Greenwood Utilities is aimed at creating a safer work environment.
The new policy bans employees from carrying several types of weapons, including spring blade knives, guns or metal knuckles, while on company property or in company vehicles or while doing service for the company. Those who violate policy could face disciplinary action including possible termination.
Dudley McBee, general manager of Greenwood Utilities, said the rule previously was assumed but never spelled out specifically.
“This policy is just a sound and prudent policy to keep safety in the workforce,” McBee said.
Tom Flanagan, the board’s legal representative, said there had been no particular incidents that led to the policy update.
“We have been working on some expansions to the employee handbook,” he said.
McBee said they do anything they can to keep employees out of harm’s way.
“They are called out at all hours of the night, but Greenwood Utilities will continue to take appropriate steps to protect them,” he said.
