Courtney Kimmel has been elected executive director of United Way of Leflore County and will begin her duties Tuesday.
Kimmel fills the position left by Freda Maxey, who announced her retirement in August after 18 years as executive director.
Kimmel will oversee United Way’s move from its current location at the Greenwood-Leflore County Chamber of Commerce to new offices on Main Street, in a building provided by Viking Range.
“We are all very excited about having Courtney as the new executive director,” said Eric Miller, president of United Way. “I feel that she will be able to bring many new ideas to the United Way that will continue to help grow this organization well into the future.”
Kimmel, a graduate of the University of Nebraska, has lived in Greenwood since 2001 and has worked as an executive assistant to Fred Carl Jr., founder of Viking, and as an account executive for Hammons and Associates Advertising.
A member of the Mississippi Agricultural Aviation Association, Kimmel is an avid pilot and is married to Frank Kimmel, owner of Kimmel Aviation Insurance Agency.
“She has a very diverse background, and I am confident she will be able to take the groundwork Freda Maxey has provided and grow and expand United Way for years to come,” said Clifton Thach, president elect.
In addition to her professional background, Kimmel has an established service record both independently and through St. John’s United Methodist Church.
She has been involved with the church’s mission committee and children and youth programs.
“I am excited about the opportunity to work for a well respected organization like the United Way,” said Kimmel in a statement. “I am confident that with the combined effort of our board and local volunteers, we will continue to help fund all of our great local agencies.”
Kimmel has two children. Brooke, 10, and Charlie, 7, attend Pillow Academy.
