Some Greenwood consumers were able to take advantage of a tax holiday on back-to-school clothing items Friday and Saturday.
Items of clothing and shoes valued at up to $100 each could be had without the addition of Mississippi sales tax. There was no limit on the amount of items that could be purchased. Some stores even included purchases over $100 and other items not included in the exemption to attract more sales.
Many Greenwood retailers participated in the holiday.
Terri Kimmel said she had seen some good deals. “I like to keep my money in Greenwood as much as possible,” she said. “We’ve done good so far.”
Her two daughters came from Cleveland to shop with their mother for clothing. They had visited downtown stores such as Smith and Co. and Rachael’s.
The day brought booming crowds to some retailers.
“There’s a lot of people in there,” Anita Walker said as she left Okun’s along U.S. 82. “But, it’s worth it. They had some good deals going on.”
Jerri Springfield, 33, a mother of two, said she was looking to Walmart for most of her back-to-school shopping.
“It doesn’t really seem like all that much. It’s just the tax,” Springfield said. “But, it makes a really big difference when you start looking at buying everything a kid needs for school.”
Samantha Marks said the pile of clothes in her J.C. Penney shopping cart was a coincidence. She said she had come for a customer appreciation sale. “I didn’t really know about the tax holiday,” Marks said. “I guess it’s nice to get a bit of a break, though.”
