Though he suffered severe injury while fighting in the Special Forces in Afghanistan, a soldier told a crowd of nearly 500 that what America has is “worth fighting for.”
Sgt. First Class Greg Stube spoke at the Wild Game Supper to benefit the North Greenwood Baptist Church’s Men’s Ministry Tuesday night.
Stube, a national figure who has made multiple appearances on CNN, Fox News and Glenn Beck’s radio program, came to spread the importance of his faith in surviving his time in combat.
“There is a biblical context for battle,” Stube said. “There is a biblical context for fighting.”
He said fighting now is necessary to defend the freedoms of all Americans.
“It may not feel like we are at a war, because people are still driving through Starbucks ordering Venti Lattes,” Stube said. “But we are at war. The things we cherish are in peril.”
He said anyone can help with the war.
“Volunteering is what it’s all about,” Stube said. “You don’t even have to leave your home. We don’t have to understand everything about each other. We just have to know that we are all Americans.”
Stube said he has noticed a startling trend in society. “I’m seeing evidence of a culture of convenience, and that is no culture at all,” Stube said. “Are you going to stop doing what you want and start doing what is right?”
The Wild Game Supper also featured thousands of dollars in prizes. The top prize included a gun safe with four guns included, valued at about $3,000.
Jim Phillips, pastor of North Greenwood Baptist, said the men’s ministry attempts to make a positive impact in the community.
Phillips called Stube a “modern day war hero” with an “unbelievable” message to portray. He said they were fortunate to be able to host him as a speaker.
“We usually put this together over two months,” Phillips said. “This came together in only two weeks. Everyone worked very hard and was dedicated to making this happen.”
