The Greenwood Leflore Consolidated School District officially opened land bidding for available 16th Section land areas Wednesday.
Mike Ainsworth, 16th Section land manager for the district, presented the opening bids for the seven properties, totaling more than 1,400 acres, that were up for lease.
Of the seven properties, only one lease was approved.
The Mossy Brake Hunting Club agreed to a five-year lease at $11,100 a year for a 430.7-acre piece of land. This is the same price and entity under which this land had previously been leased.
Five of the properties are returning to the advertising stage of the bidding process as approved by the board. These properties either did not receive a bid, or the bid offered to the board was rejected without negotiation.
One piece of land with 229 acres is up for a price match.
The Gypsy Hunting Club offered $2,750 a year for a three-year lease. The same piece of property also received a bid of $5,000 a year from Frank Hornsby. Because the Gypsy Hunting Club had previously leased the land, the board voted to give the club five business days to match the bid.
All seven properties are under the fishing and hunting category as listed by the Mississippi Secretary of State’s Office.
Rebidding for the sections that qualified is set for the next regularly scheduled board meeting on Aug. 5. Forms and other resources may be found at www.sos.ms.gov.
