People who receive Social Security disability benefits but would still like to work can learn a few of the options available to them at a seminar Wednesday.
The Work Incentive Seminar Event (WISE) will be held from 10 a.m. to noon in the Business Education Building auditorium at Mississippi Valley State University. It is is sponsored by the Mississippi Department of Rehabilitation.
“Most recipients of SSA (Social Security Administration) benefits are not aware of the numerous SSA work incentives designed to support their efforts,” said Tina Chow, community work incentives coordinator.
Chow said participants will also learn about the Ticket to Work program, which provides people receiving Social Security benefits with more choices for receiving employment services.
Chow said a few of the main questions that will be answered at the seminar include:
- Can I work and still keep my Social Security benefits?
- Can I work and keep my healthcare benefits?
- Who can help me understand how working will affect my benefits?
- Who can help me find a job?
The seminar is designed for people from age 14 through retirement age that receive Social Security disability benefits. Chow said the event is also open to community partners and individuals who support disability beneficiaries.
The seminar is the third WISE event in Mississippi, Chow said.
“WISE participants come away from the event with increased motivation created by their new knowledge about work supports, opportunities for employment and the prospect of moving towards self-sufficiency through employment,” Chow said.
Space at the event is limited, but registration is free. Register by calling (877) 643-8327 or visit socialsecurity.gov/work/wise.html
