A police chase that started in Yazoo City Tuesday night ended in Itta Bena when the fleeing motorist got stuck in a ditch.
The chase began around 9 p.m. as the Yazoo Police Department was responding to a domestic violence call, according to Yazoo City Police Capt. William Nevels.
A pursuit ensued, and officers from multiple law enforcement agencies, including Leflore County deputies, tried to stop the driver of a black Kia with Humphreys County plates who traveled toward Belzoni and then Itta Bena.
Among those also assisting in the chase were the Yazoo County and Humphreys County sheriff’s departments.
The Yazoo Herald newspaper reported speeds exceeded 70 miles per hour.
In Itta Bena, the chase traveled along several streets and continued to Pine Acre Ranch Apartments, a witness said.
The driver, Ariel Johnson, was arrested after “she went into an apartment complex that had a cul-de-sac, and when she tried to come out, she tried to cross a ditch,” Nevels said. “She was able to be apprehended from there.”
Nevels claimed that Johnson struck another agency’s vehicle while fleeing, and he said that incident is under investigation.
Johnson was charged with domestic violence and felony fleeing, according to the Herald, and was being held Thursday in the Yazoo County Regional Correctional Facility. Charges from other agencies are pending.
