Only a few days after being readmitted to Mississippi Valley State University, a student found himself on suspension.
Darrell Winford, 20, of Ruleville, who was arrested Tuesday on charges of possession of a firearm, had only recently been reinstated as a student at Valley.
He was suspended after being charged with possession of marijuana March 31 during a drug sweep on campus.
His sentence was non-adjudicated, so he was readmitted to the university Friday.
He was arrested in the parking lot of the MVSU Student Union after officers received a report of someone possibly smoking marijuana.
Winford and two 17-year-old males were sitting in a vehicle registered to Winford. Officers found a .25 automatic pistol in the glove compartment and a knife in the trunk.
Winford was taken to the Leflore County Sheriff’s Department and jailed. The minors were released.
According to Valley’s communications office, Winford is suspended indefinitely from the university, pending the outcome of the court hearing involving the possession of a firearm.
Valley had expelled the 15 students in line with its zero tolerance policy. After re-examining the practice, the university now suspends students until a court decision is made.
