Mississippi Valley State University will hold its annual First Lady’s Scholarship Luncheon at The Historic Elks Building in Greenwood on Thursday.
The luncheon, part of MVSU’s 2015 homecoming schedule, aims to raise scholarship funds for “deserving, academically sound students who attend MVSU,” said Cassandra Krah, manager of special events and activities at the university.
The event will begin at 11 a.m.
The luncheon is part of a campaign to raise $46,000 in scholarship funds. In addition to revenue from luncheon ticket sales, MVSU will seek funds from local businesses, fraternities and sororities, alumni and private donors.
“The First Lady’s Scholarship Luncheon helps donors make an everlasting investment in our students,” said Deborah Elaine Bynum, wife of MVSU’s president, Dr. William Bynum. “For several students, a higher education was only a dream, but that dream has become a reality because of generous donations throughout the years.”
Dr. Cherae Farmer-Dixon, an MVSU graduate and current dean of the School of Dentistry at Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee, will deliver a keynote address.
Farmer-Dixon is involved in research on oral health disparities, minority dental school enrollment and community outreach and intervention.
There will be a silent auction in which participants will be able to bid on a helicopter ride, art and a dinner with Dr. William Bynum and Deborah Elaine Bynum. Winners will be announced during the luncheon.
