East Elementary took a break from standardized testing with a motivation "Fun Friday" event featuring a special guest.
Performing alongside the school's talent program was Aljervan Johnson, known as Lil Al and locally famous for his song and dance "Morehouse Swag."
Johnson said he was happy to come back and talk to the students from his old school.
"It makes me feel good to be able to come back and perform for the kids," he said. "They go crazy."
Lil Al wasn't exaggerating. Nearly every student was familiar with the Morehouse Swag and was able to dance along with him. He was also swarmed for autographs after his performance.
"It's on YouTube and they are performing it all over," Lil Al said. "It's become a movement."
He said he derives his inspiration to perform from his family and from the vibe of the crowd.
"The feedback from the crowd really supports the performance," Lil Al said. "It's an incredible feeling."
The event was held as a motivational event for the MCT2 tests. Principal Mary Brown said the administration wanted to reward the students for their hard work.
"What we are doing today is allowing the students and parents the opportunity to gather together and celebrate our students' academic accomplishments thus far," Brown said.
"Our students have done an exceptional job here at East, and we want to allow them the opportunity to have a day where they can celebrate their successes."
Lil Al told the students that if they did well on their tests, he would come back. A few of the children were even given a chance to do the Morehead Swag on stage.
