Leflore County’s unemployment rate improved to 11.1 percent in April, the lowest rate for that month since 2009.
The number of unemployed in the county — 1,390 — was 370 fewer than in April 2011, when the jobless rate was 13.7 percent, according to figures released Wednesday by the Mississippi Department of Employment Security. The number of employed was up 10 over a year ago.
The county’s revised jobless rate in March was 12.3 percent.
Statewide, the unemployment rate improved to 8.3 percent, compared to 8.7 percent in March and 10 percent in April 2011.
The national rate in April was 8.1 percent.
Fifty-four of Mississippi’s 82 counties had jobless rates below 10 percent in April — six more than in March.
Rankin County again had the state’s lowest rate at 5.2 percent, and Holmes County recorded the highest at 14.9 percent.
Leflore County’s jobless rate was the 66th best in the state, five spots higher than March.
The April rates and rankings for other nearby counties were:
• Carroll: 8.7 percent (tied for 30th)
• Grenada: 8.7 percent (tied for 30th)
• Tallahatchie: 9.3 percent (tied for 42nd)
• Montgomery: 10.8 percent (tied for 64th)
• Sunflower: 13.8 percent (77th)
• Humphreys: 14.4 percent (tied for 79th)
