More than 10 businesses have signed up for the EmployAbility job fair, a career event for those with disabilities, in Greenwood.
The Mississippi Department of Rehabilitation Services and the Governor’s Job Fair Network will host the event for the first time in the city on March 6 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Leflore County Civic Center.
Chris Howard, executive director at MDRS, said Friday the department hopes to have more businesses commit to the fair.
The city of Greenwood, Delta Mobile Home Park, APAC-Mississippi Inc., Milwaukee Tool, R.C. Construction, Families First for Mississippi, Capital City Beverages, Greenwood Leflore Hospital, Viking Range LLC, Planters Bank, Waffle House, Ingalls Shipbuilding and others either have job openings or will in the future, he said.
The MDRS provides services for the disabled, including help with finding full-time employment.
“If they have a disability and they want to go to work or they have a fear of losing a job with a disability,” someone at the MDRS office is able to assist them, he said.
The job fair has always been part of MDRS services, but after Howard took the executive director position three years ago he expanded it to other areas. This year the job fair will be in Tupelo, Greenwood, Jackson and Cleveland.
The career event is open to the public, and attendees are asked to bring a resume and “dress for success” or business casual.
Computers will also be set up to write or print resumes.
Howard said sometimes employers have interviewed attendees on the spot, so job seekers should have “a great attitude and be excited about the day.”
Although the fair will open until noon, Howard suggested to come early if possible to have a chance to speak with all employers or recruiters.
