Greenwood duo Arrows and Anchors played to a full house Saturday night to celebrate the release of their debut album.
Arrows and Anchors, a Christian folk rock duo, consists of Amy Coleman and Reid Kelly. They began playing together at Westminster Presbyterian Church, where they co-direct the choir.
Performing at the Viking Training Center, they played selections from “Volume 1,” which came out exactly one month earlier.
“I thought it just went amazingly,” said Coleman of the concert. “I felt like we got a great crowd.”
The duo were accompanied by Kirk Hensley on drums, Michael Shore on bass and Tucker Ward on electric guitar. All three musicians are from Jackson and are either current students or graduates of Mississippi College. Coleman said they only rehearsed with the band once, a few hours before the show.
“We sent them the music as well as the chord charts in advance, so they did their prep work ahead of time,” said Coleman, adding that by the time they went on stage she felt as though they had been playing together for years. “We couldn’t have been happier with how well it worked out because they really did their prep work.”
The group also was accompanied on several songs by Richard Owens on mandolin. Owens is the pastor at Westminster Presbyterian and plays guitar and banjo in addition to mandolin.
Coleman said that as pastor, Owens doesn’t often get to play alongside her and Kelly.
As far as what’s next for Arrows and Anchors, Kelly said they have upcoming shows in Cleveland and Oxford, and tentatively in Starkville, Tupelo and Nashville.
“I think we’ll be able to play as much as we can while keeping our day jobs,” said Kelly.
Coleman said that after the strenuous work of recording and launching an album, she is looking forward to taking some time off before her next show.
Arrows and Anchors is the first musical group to book the Viking Training Center since the building became available for event rental.
