The Greenwood-Leflore County Chamber of Commerce kicked off its 2010 leadership program Thursday with a new set of participants and recognition of the 2009 graduates.
The chamber’s Leadership Greenwood program is a yearlong program designed to train local citizens in the practice of community leadership. Nine graduates completed the program this year.
“This class has been great,” said Beth Stevens, executive director of the chamber. “They have done a good job of getting out there in the community, and we are looking forward to see what they do in the future.”
The class includes a variety of tours and seminars at least once per month on getting involved in the community.
Staplcotn’s Chris McClain, the 2009 class president, said he learned a lot about leadership and the community.
“I hope to take the things I learned here and use them to advance forward in my career and in the community,” McClain said.
He said the program would benefit many in the community and encouraged local businesses to nominate candidates.
McClain also offered advice to the upcoming class.
“Look around in the community for a way that you can help out and do it,” McClain said. “If you don’t know what the community needs, ask people.”
Sabrina Brown, nominated by the Greenwood Leflore Hospital Clinic Network, said she was honored to be up for the class.
“I’m very excited. It’s a new experience,” Brown said. “I’m looking forward to see what we are going to do.”
Candidates for the 2010 class can still be nominated through January. Those who have a candidate in mind may contact the Chamber at 453-4152.
