Polls open at 7 a.m. Tuesday for the special election to pick the next District 3 supervisor in Leflore County.
Incumbent Preston Ratliff, 54, faces challengers Anjuan Brown, 43, and Charles McCain Jr., 30, in the nonpartisan race. If no candidate gets more than 50 percent of the votes, a runoff will be held on Jan. 10.
The election is being held after a judge vacated the results of the Aug. 2 Democratic primary and the Nov. 8 general election because of a widespread effort by Brown’s campaign workers to recruit absentee voters, even if those voters had no intention of being outside the county on Election Day.
Edward Course, chairman of the Leflore County Election Commission, and Trey Evans, circuit clerk, could not be reached for comment this morning.
Four voting precincts are included in District 3: the courthouse, the Main Street fire station, Schlater and Mississippi Valley State University.
Absentee balloting has been held in the special election.
