The Leflore County Sheriff’s Department finally has its hands on an Itta Bena man who escaped after being arrested and charged with statutory rape.
Donnell Griffin, 25, 116 Kennedy Drive, was in the Leflore County Jail this morning, charged with the statutory rape of a 15-year-old girl. He also faces a charge of escape, Sheriff Ricky Banks said.
Griffin, who turned himself in over the weekend, is also being held for the Mississippi Department of Corrections, which has a hold on him for uttering a forgery.
“He’s not going anywhere,” Banks said this morning.
Griffin was originally arrested on April 13. Banks said deputies were called to a home in the Itta Bena area around 10:30 p.m.
Griffin was “caught in the home of the victim,” Banks said.
The Commonwealth does not identify victims of alleged sexual assault.
After Griffin was handcuffed, he was placed in the back of a patrol car while deputies continued their investigation, the sheriff said.
Griffin later told investigators that the window in the patrol car was down, and that’s how he escaped.
Banks said he believes someone aided Griffin in his escape from the patrol car. He said more arrests in the case are possible.
When Griffin turned himself in, he had managed to wriggle one of his hands from the handcuffs. He hid the handcuff on the other hand by wearing a long-sleeved shirt, the sheriff said.
