Greenwood Municipal Judge Carlos Palmer dismissed simple assault charges Tuesday against the wife of a Leflore County supervisor after the complainant failed to appear in court.
Jackie Ratliff, 51, 1933 Bradford Ave., was arrested and released on her own recognizance on June 17 after Carl Winters, a campaign worker for her husband’s opponent, Anjuan Brown, filed charges.
Winters alleged that Ratliff threatened to kill him on June 8 following a Greenwood Voters League meeting for allegedly stealing her husband’s campaign signs.
Ratliff is the wife of District 3 Supervisor Preston Ratliff.
She denied Winters’ allegations from the beginning, saying it was all a political ploy.
“We all know what it was all about,” Ratliff said following her court appearance Tuesday.
Winters said this morning, “I didn’t show up. I wanted (the charges) to be dismissed.”
He said in the heat of a hard-fought campaign it is understandable for nerves to get frayed.
“I understood why she did what she did,” he said. “I want to forgive and forget.”
