Many local businesses are hiring, yet nearly one in every 10 adults in Leflore County is unemployed, which is making some wonder why that is.
During a drive-through job fair at the Leflore County Civic Center on Wednesday, dozens were eagerly applying for open positions with some of the area’s most prominent businesses.

Payne wins sheriff's primary; Palmer, McQueen reelected easily

James Payne Sr. had no trouble in clearing his first hurdle to become Leflore County’s next sheriff.
Payne, a criminal investigator with the Fourth Circuit District Attorney’s Office, took 68% of the vote to win Tuesday’s Democratic primary, according to unofficial results.

Man shot over weekend dies

An 18-year-old Greenwood man who was shot over the weekend died from his injuries Monday morning.
Leflore County Coroner Debra Sanders said she received a call around 8:10 a.m. Monday from the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson about the death of Rashad Sherrod.
