Man found not guilty of murder

A Leflore County jury found a man accused of murder not guilty on Wednesday.
Bennie Leahman, 23, was cleared of the charge after a two-day trial. He and his cousin, Daveontae Leahman, 26, were both accused of killing 18-year-old Artravius Gillis nearly four years ago.

Man charged with kidnapping

A Tunica man was jailed Tuesday on charges of kidnapping a Greenwood woman and stealing her truck and firearm.
Hosea Mondrea Jackson, 40, of 1083 Nellie Drive in Tunica, was charged with kidnapping, felony theft of a vehicle and petit larceny.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
