Two Greenwood men have died after a Wednesday night shooting.
The victims were Lasine McKinnon, 48, and Demetrius McClain, 41. Both men died from gunshot wounds, Leflore County Coroner Debra Sanders said.
McClain had driven to McKinnon’s residence on the 300 block of West Monroe Avenue. The two men, who were friends, were sitting in the vehicle driven by McClain in the driveway of McKinnon’s residence when some persons allegedly opened fire on them, Sanders said.
A 911 call in reference to the shooting was placed at 10:15 p.m., the coroner added.
McKinnon was pronounced dead at the scene of the shooting at 11:20 p.m. Emergency medical services transported McClain to Greenwood Leflore Hospital, where he was to be medevaced by helicopter to another hospital for further treatment. McClain died before reaching the helipad, however, Sanders said.
Greenwood Interim Police Chief Clifton King said Friday that the incident is under investigation.
He did encourage anyone with tips or leads about the shooting to call the Greenwood Police Department at 662-453-3311 or Greenwood-Leflore-Carroll County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
Thursday morning, in relation to Wednesday’s double homicide, Greenwood Mayor Kenderick Cox and members of the City Council convened at City Hall to meet with police and sheriff’s deputies to discuss a potential state of emergency that would be implemented next week.
McKinnon and McClain’s deaths bring up this year’s homicide count to eight in Greenwood and Leflore County, all of which have involved firearms.
