Dispute over Carl Center operations continues

Mayor Kenderick Cox and the Greenwood City Council continue to clash over The Carl Center’s operations and other department appointments.
Cox, who returned Tuesday after missing the Aug. 19 meeting with an illness, told the council he feels it is overstepping its authority.

Sheriff issues warning about selling unapproved hemp items

The Leflore County Sheriff’s Office has notified businesses outside Greenwood city limits that the sale of non-FDA-approved hemp products intended for public consumption is illegal.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
