100th anniversary: Celebration held for Keesler Bridge

The 100th anniversary of the Keesler Bridge, which stretches across the Yazoo River and connects downtown Greenwood and north Greenwood, was celebrated Thursday afternoon.
The Mississippi Heritage Trust also had its 2025 Listen Up! Historic Preservation Conference in Greenwood this week.

MDCC mourns loss of Trojans football player

Mississippi Delta Community College is mourning the loss of a student-athlete.
MDCC announced in a press release early Friday morning the death of Emanuell Cooks of Elba, Alabama, due to medical complications following the Trojans' football game Thursday. MDCC played Hinds Community College in Raymond.

Community barbecue

A long line of volunteers served burgers, hot dogs and sides for an even longer line of people gathered for a free barbecue Wednesday evening at the Ballas Family Community Kitchen, presented by the kitchen and You Matter Ministries. The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
