Local youth baseball teams place 1st, 2nd at Grand Slam tourney

The Greenwood Bandits topped off their summer baseball schedule with a second-place showing at the Grand Slam Tournament in Starkville last weekend.
The Bandits went 3-1-1, falling 9-2 to Eupora in the championship game. Steele Bennett had two hits, and Aden Weems struck out three in a complete-game outing.

A new memorial marker was welcomed Saturday by the relatives and loved ones of 16 servicemen killed in a plane crash in Itta Bena eight years ago.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
