A 55-year-old man was killed early Saturday morning when he was struck by an oncoming driver on U.S. 82.

Law enforcement converge on a suspect’s vehicle after the driver led them on a high-speed chase that covered nearly every major street in Greenwood Friday night. Johnson promoted to superintendent

The Greenwood Leflore Consolidated School Board has appointed Mary Johnson as the district’s next superintendent.
Johnson is moving up from her role as curriculum director to the top job, effective immediately. She replaces James Johnson-Waldington.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
