Sheriff left Carroll Co. legacy

When the news came on Monday, Sept. 1 that longtime Carroll County Sheriff C.D. Whitfield Jr. passed away at the age of 93 at his home in the Jefferson Community of Carroll County, it was the end of an era.

Johnson steps down at MDCC

Tavares Johnson has stepped down as the head football coach at Mississippi Delta Community College after three seasons at the helm of the Trojans’ program.
Johnson is leaving Moorhead to return to Northside High School in Shelby to take over as head coach, a position he held for three years before going to MDCC.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
