What a beginning to the new year!
The ice storm of 2026 has been something we won’t soon forget. A week without power and some time without water has proven to me that I wouldn’t have lasted long out on the prairie. Every single time I walked into a room, I turned the light switch on, knowing the electricity was off.

Pillow Academy’s run at an Overall Tournament championship at Mississippi College's A.E. Wood Coliseum came to a halt, as District 1-4A foe Jackson Academy claimed a 47-40 win Friday over the Lady Mustangs to avenge two losses during the regular season.

Services for Geary Lee Phillip of Greenwood will be at noon Saturday at Century Funeral Home.
Mr. Phillip, 58, died Saturday, Feb. 7, 2026, in Des Plaines, Illinois.
He was disabled.
Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Friday at Century Funeral Home.
Pastor Kenneth McClung will officiate at the services.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
