The Greenwood All-Stars opened play in the 12U 2022 Dizzy Dean State Tournament Thursday with a 20-0 win over the Byhalia All-Stars in Senatobia.
Greenwood, coached by John Moyer, will take on Southaven at 4 p.m. Friday in a winner’s bracket game. Southaven won two games Thursday, beating Clarksdale 18-6 in its first contest and knocking off Senatobia 15-0 in an afternoon game.
Fin Thomas threw a no-hitter in the two-inning contest for Greenwood. He struck out all six batters he faced.
Carter Goss had a single, double and home run, and Gregory Conner had a double and homer. Rivers Taylor tacked on a single and two doubles, and Zachary Russell, Logan Galey and Caleb Harris had two singles apiece.
In other action involving local teams, the 6U all-star team slipped past the Grenada All-Stars 15-14 and will play Saturday at 11 a.m. against Starkville Maroon, which beat Columbus 20-5 Thursday.
The 10U Greenwood stars defeated Ripley 12-1 Thursday afternoon in Batesville at the 10U State Tournament.
They will play Saturday at 2 p.m. against Delta Sports, which beat Senatobia 13-3 Thursday night. Delta Sports advanced to that game with a 9-8 win over Southaven earlier in the day.
No results were known as of press time for the 7U, 8U and 9U teams.
Two girls softball teams were competing in state tournaments as well.
At the 6U tournament in Batesville, Greenwood fell 12-6 to Hernando and will play Friday at 2:30 p.m. against Cleveland, which lost 10-9 to Southaven Thursday.
At the 8U tournament in Batesville, Greenwood opened with a 15-5 win over Indianola Thursday morning and took on Batesville Thursday night.
A win sends Greenwood against Senatobia Saturday at 8 a.m. A loss and they play Friday at 11:30 a.m. against Southaven, which fell 16-12 to Grenada.
