Greenwood Country Club professional John Pielemeier said he is expecting between 20-24 local golfers to compete in this weekend’s Senior Championship.
“We will have three different flights, and they will play 36 holes of golf in two days,” said Pielemeier, who is in his sixth year as the GCC club pro. “The three flights will be for ages 50-59, 60-69 and 70-up. Most of these guys have been playing golf for a lot of years. It’s their day in the sun, so to speak.”
Robert Pannell is the defending champion from the championship flight.
Richie Fulgham won the event in 2020 and 2019.
GCC Invitational full: Pielemeier added that the Greenwood County Club Invitational, which will be celebrating its 75th year, will be played July 8-10.
“We filled up the field in five days,” he said. “We have 192 players signed up. It’s the oldest stroke play tournament in the state, and it always has a good drawing of players from the state.”
Gallagher competes at state: Greenwood’s Cissye Gallagher competed in the 2022 Women’s State Amateur June 10-12 at the Laurel Country Club.
Gallagher finished 16th overall as she was 22 shots behind Lucy Burke, who won the three-day event with a 226 total. Burke is from Hattiesburg.
Gallagher shot a 248, shooting 84 on the first day, 78 on the second day and 86 on the third day.
