Former players and students of Earnest “Hut” Williams are planning an event to show their appreciation for the longtime former Amanda Elzy football coach.
They’ll meet to reminisce at 7 p.m. April 13 at Elzy’s cafeteria.
Bill Lewis of Memphis, who played for Williams from 1980 to 1984 and is putting together the reunion, said they wanted to honor the impact their former coach had on their lives while he was still living.
Williams, 77, is a Laurel native; he was a star quarterback at Pascagoula Negro High School and then Jackson College (now Jackson State) from 1954-1958.
In 1960, he became one of the first faculty members and coaches at Amanda Elzy. In 1972, he left to complete his master’s degree at Tennessee State University in Nashville, returning to Elzy in 1975.
He retired from Elzy in 2010.
In November 2011, Williams was inducted into the Jackson State University Centennial Football Team Hall of Fame.
