Carroll Academy has hired Stephen Crenshaw to replace Tommy Acy as athletic director, head basketball coach and assistant football coach for the Rebels.
The vacancy was filled less than a month after Acy accepted a position coaching and teaching at Pillow Academy.
Crenshaw comes to Carroll after a decade-long stint (2009-2018) teaching and coaching at nearby Kirk Academy, where he worked with the Raiders’ football, basketball, baseball and track teams. Self-employed since 2018, Crenshaw couldn’t stay away from coaching for long.
“I think he’s going to be a good asset for us,” CA Headmaster Penny Mitchell said. “He’s a people person. He’s got a heart for the kids.”
Although Crenshaw has never served in an administrative role such as athletic director, he believes his 20 years of prior experience working in human resources have prepared him well for this moment.
So far, he’s wasting no time getting started. Crenshaw doesn’t officially assume his new duties until June 1, but he met with the basketball team Tuesday to lay out his vision for the program.
“It’s a big challenge,” Crenshaw said. “They’ve won North State the last two years. I want to come in and keep that momentum going.”
“Carroll has hard-nosed kids and they have a lot of fight and grit to them,” he added. “Their work ethic is something I don’t have to worry about.”
