Delta Streets Academy will go for its first win on the field when it pays a visit to Central Holmes Christian School.
Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. Friday in Lexington.
The Lions are 1-3 with a forfeit win over Hillcrest Christian in their season opener on Aug. 20. However, they have lost three straight to Washington School, Indianola Academy and Sylva-Bay Academy, which was a 34-21 setback last week.
“Sylva-Bay was a very good team, and we faced two good tradition-rich teams the previous two weeks,” said DSA head coach Travis Upshaw. “We keep grinding it out. We feel like we are close to turning this thing around. We have grown from these last three games. The kids are believing and continue to work hard.
“You take away five big plays Sylva-Bay had last week, and they only averaged 2.8 yards per play. Our defense didn’t play a bad game. We’ve just got to put it all together and eliminate a few mistakes.”
It was a tight game for one half as SBA only led 14-13 at the half. The Saints outscored the Lions 20-8 in the second half.
Jalyn Lewis continues to impress on both sides of the ball. The senior running back/linebacker ran for 80 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries and chipped in with eight total tackles (two for loss).
“Jalyn is really coming into his own,” Upshaw added. “He has worked so hard to make himself a better player.”
The Trojans come into Friday’s contest with an 0-3 record. Central Holmes dropped a 43-8 decision to Winston Academy last week and opened the season with back-to-back losses to Brookhaven Academy (40-14) and Tri-County (41-0).
“Central Holmes has struggled to open the season,” the second-year DSA coach said. “They have played well in spurts. We just need to put it all together and take it to them.”
n J.Z. George hosts Holly Springs — The Jaguars will celebrate homecoming Friday as they entertain the Hawks at 7 p.m. at Farris Jenkins Field in North Carrollton.
J.Z. George (1-2) dropped a 67-32 decision to rival Winona High School last week. The Jags had 249 yards passing and only four yards rushing against the Tigers. Jordun Normal and D’Anthony McGlothan combined to throw for the yardage as both caught TD passes from each other. A third touchdown receiving was hauled in by Alex Criss from Normal.
Holly Springs is 0-3 overall after losing 53-6 last week to Caledonia. The Hawks have been outscored 157-6 in their first three games.
“They have good athletes, but Holly Springs is known as a basketball school,” said J.Z. George head coach Rusty Smith. “It doesn’t mean we can take them lightly. It’s homecoming, and there are always a lot of distractions. We need to stay focused and go out and do our jobs.”
