Three Greenwood-area athletes stood out for their overall play last Friday in earning the Commonwealth’s Player of the Week honors.
Greenwood High School’s Davin Anderson carried his team to a 16-6 win over crosstown rival Amanda Elzy as the Bulldogs improved to 2-2 on the season.
Anderson, a senior who has been pressed into playing quarterback for the young Bulldogs, rushed for 99 yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries and had two 2-point conversion runs. He also completed 4-of-6 passes for 28 yards.
Greenwood entertains Lanier High School Friday.
Joining Anderson is Pillow Academy’s Nelson Hodges. The versatile senior did a little of everything for the Mustangs in their 28-14 win over District 1-5A foe Magnolia Heights.
Hodges lined up at quarterback and running back, gaining 63 yards and scoring three touchdowns on 16 carries. He also had two receptions for 17 yards and completed one pass for five yards. On the defensive side of the ball, where he usually plays in the secondary, he had six total tackles.
Pillow (4-1 overall, 1-0 in district) celebrates homecoming Friday against Jackson Academy.
The third player honored is J.Z. George’s D’Anthony “Yogi” McGlothan. The senior speedster played quarterback, running back and receiver on offense in the Jags’ 20-8 win over visiting Holly Springs.
McGlothan racked up 80 yards on 11 carries and scored one touchdown, completing his only pass for 10 yards, and grabbing two receptions for 50 yards and a score.
J.Z. George (2-2) visits Elzy Friday.
Offensive honorable mentions go to Greenwood’s Xavier Hoover, Pillow’s Dayne Sanford, Elzy’s Jevarion Glover, and J.Z. George’s Kendarius Head.
Hoover, a junior running back, rushed for 71 yards on 11 carries in the win over the Panthers.
Sanford, a junior running back, ran for 126 yards and a TD on 16 carries.
Glover, a freshman quarterback, was 10-of-18 for 100 yards. He ran for 21 yards on three tries. Head, a senior running back, had 90 yards on 11 carries and one catch for 20 yards.
Defensive honorable mentions go to Greenwood’s Kizear Little, Pillow’s Tate Galey, Carroll’s Maddox Carpenter, Delta Streets’ Draper Aldridge, AJ McGhee and Jalyn Lewis, Elzy’s Eldred Horton and Anthony Brownlee, and J.Z. George’s Keiyhaun Wilks and Da’Ravion Seals.
Little, a junior safety, had three tackles, a sack and broke up a pass. Galey, a junior cornerback, had eight tackles.
Carpenter, a junior linebacker, had eight tackles in the Rebels’ 36-0 loss to Greenville St. Joe.
McGhee, Aldridge and Lewis all had eight tackles each in the Lions’ 24-6 loss to Central Holmes. Horton, a sophomore linebacker, and Brownlee, a senior end, had six tackles each. Wilks, a junior end, and Seals, a senior linebacker, had eight tackles apiece.
