Following an on-court altercation Friday during the J.Z. George girls basketball game against Choctaw County, the Lady Jaguars’ season has come to an end.
The girls basketball program has been placed on restrictive probation from Jan. 30, 2023 to Jan. 30, 2024. They will not be allowed to play in next week’s Region 4-2A Tournament, thus ending their season with a 3-20 overall record and a 1-4 mark in league play.
The Mississippi High School Activities Association handed down its punishment Monday afternoon. On Friday, spectators from the J.Z. George crowd rushed onto the court following a hard foul and pushing and shoving involving players from J.Z. George and Choctaw County.
“Our district is firmly against any and all misconduct from fans or players,” said Carroll County Schools Superintendent Joey Carpenter. “Our J.Z. George High School girls basketball season is complete. They will be on restrictive probation for the next year.”
The MHSAA said the girls basketball team can resume playing when the 2023-2024 season starts in the fall, but all district games will be counted as losses and the Lady Jaguars will enter next year’s district tournament as the last-place team. J.Z. George will be in Region 4-2A for the 2023-2025 school years with Eupora, Philadelphia, Sebastopol and Union.
