Two fraternity chapters will be sponsoring various Easter egg hunts at day care centers and other places in the Greenwood area on Saturday.
Brothers of the Beta Rho and Beta Theta chapters of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity from Mississippi Valley State University will be delivering eggs to local day care facilities and also hiding eggs in various neighborhoods around town, said Troy Brown Jr., a member of the brotherhood.
The day care centers include Bright Beginnings, God’s Helping Hand, Klassy Kids Learning Center and Agape Love Learning and Development Center. The apartment complexes and neighborhoods include: Snowden-Jones Apartments, David Jordan Apartments, Crestview Apartments, Hayes Homes, Curtis Flowers Circle, Curtis Moore Apartments, Baptist Town, McLaurin Park, Sam Leach Park and the Pine Street area.
“This is just a way to give back to the kids, especially with COVID going on. I know a lot of places aren’t doing their egg hunts,” Brown said. “So we try to provide a safe way for them to still enjoy the festivities of Easter while still being safe and following CDC guidelines.”
In total, more than 1,600 eggs will be delivered or hidden for children to find.
Originally, the group had planned to do a wide-scale egg hunt in Whittington Park, but Brown said they changed their minds out of concern about the weather and the coronavirus.
He said he feels the community will appreciate the fraternity’s efforts, considering how many events in the last year have been canceled or postponed.
“One of the biggest things that people love is interaction, social interaction. … So, even though it’s small, you never know what you have until you lose it,” he said. “We never knew how important it was just for kids to go out and look for Easter eggs until they couldn’t do it. So, we wanted to just give them the opportunity to actually be kids.”
The fraternity has held other events during the pandemic, including a virtual Black History Month celebration and distance workout sessions.
More information about this event and others planned can be found on the “Friends of the M.V.S.U. Ques” page on Facebook.
