The Amanda Elzy girls and boys basketball teams picked up Region 3-3A wins Wednesday night at Winona High School.
The Lady Panthers got a balanced scoring attack in taking down the Lady Tigers 50-45. Kennedy Johnson led the way with 12 points, and Evelyn Kelly had 11 points. Zoreya Beckworth chipped in eight points, and Dekeriya Hatten, Avril Silas and Olivia Wilson tallied five points each.
Elzy (16-8 overall, 5-2 in Region 3) led 14-3 after the first period, 31-19 at the half and 40-32 after the third quarter.
In the boys game, Elzy had three players score in double figures en route to a 63-38 win over Winona (6-15, 1-6).
Jacoreyun Miller had 16 points, and Zavion McClung 12 for the Panthers (14-10, 4-3). Keithrick Parker tacked on 10 points, and Caleb Brownlow had eight. Perveontah Stancil had seven points.
Elzy raced out to a 26-7 lead after the first period and led 37-15 at the half. The Panthers held a 49-28 lead at the end of the third frame.
Elzy hosts Humphreys County Friday, and Winona entertains Ruleville. The Region 3 Tournament is next week and will be played at Greenwood High School’s gymnasium.
-Leflore County: Visiting Ruleville outscored Leflore 8-6 in overtime to pick up a 50-48 win Wednesday night in Region 3-2A action.
Leflore (6-14 overall, 2-7 in district) led 10-9 after one. The game was at 13-13 at the half, and Riverside led 29-26 after the third. The contest was knotted at 42-42 at the end of regulation.
D’rion Freeman led Leflore with nine points and six rebounds, and Keveunte Parker had eight points and eight boards. Kevon Cross chipped in eight points and seven boards, and Ladarius Pleasants had seven points. D’Arnez Bell had six points.
In the girls game, Riverside posted a 50-19 win, dropping the Lady Tigers to 3-17 overall and 1-8 in region play.
Antionette Holston and Jameshia Kyles had five points each. Holston also had five rebounds, and Kyles pulled down four boards.
Leflore is at Northside Friday.
-Greenwood High: The Lady Bulldogs and Bulldogs will be on the road Saturday as they take on Region 3-4A foe Clarksdale High School.
The games have been postponed twice this week because of weather conditions in Clarksdale.
The Region 3 Tournament gets started next week at Yazoo City.
