Suspect in 2 shooting deaths arrested

Greenwood police have arrested a man believed to be involved in the shooting deaths of two men on Sunday.
Police Chief Terrence Craft said the 23-year-old suspect was arrested Tuesday and was being held for investigation. He said charges had not been filed as of Wednesday morning but should be coming soon.

Shooting victim found Tuesday is identified

A Greenwood man has been identified as the victim of a shooting south of Sidon that left him dead and another injured.
Leflore County Coroner said Demarious Jackson, 23, was found dead in a vehicle on U.S. 49 on Tuesday.
The vehicle was found off the highway in a wooded area between Sidon and Cruger.

Local news matters to Greenwood. It keeps the people informed and connected. It asks the questions they want answered. It elevates what’s good, and it exposes what’s not.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
