Three juveniles were arrested for killing a pit bull by bashing in its skull under a bridge near Rising Sun.
The juveniles were turned over to youth court, said Leflore County Sheriff Ricky Banks.
The owner of the 10-month-old dog, Charles Hood, 37, described the act as "cold-blooded."
The dog didn't have a mean bone in his body, he said. "They beat his old head in."
Witnesses said they saw the children walking the dog from its home at Alexander Trailer Park on Highway 49 South toward Rising Sun on Sunday.
Hood called the sheriff's department Monday. Witnesses then helped located the juveniles, who confessed to the crime to law enforcement officials and showed a deputy where the dog's body was, Banks said.
"I know they're kids, but at that age, if they're going to do something like that, what are they going to do later?" Hood said.
Hood said he had approximately $1,300 in veterinarian bills invested in his pet.
Hood said the dog had been let outside to use the bathroom and was on a chain when he was taken.
Tina Smith of Four Paws Animal Health Center was upset about the incident.
"This does not need to happen again," she said. "The word needs to get out there."
